Strip Lighting in the UAE
LED strip is the workhorse behind almost every modern UAE interior. It is what lights the cove around a majlis ceiling, the underside of a floating vanity, the reveal behind a TV wall and the shadow gap under a staircase — always hidden, always judged on the quality of the glow rather than the fitting itself. Get the density and the diffusion right and the ceiling appears to float; get them wrong and you see a row of dots.

What to get right
Density decides whether you see dots
The shallower the cove and the closer the diffuser, the higher the LED density needs to be. A deep cove that throws light onto a ceiling can use standard density because the wall does the diffusing. A strip set 10-15mm behind a frosted cover in joinery needs high-density or COB tape, or the individual emitters read through as scallops.
24V over long runs, 12V for short details
Voltage drop is what makes the far end of a long run visibly dimmer and warmer than the near end. 24V roughly doubles the usable run length before that becomes noticeable, which is why it is the sensible default for perimeter cove in a villa. 12V remains fine for short joinery and cabinet details.
Specify IP rating by where it actually sits
Interior cove needs no ingress protection at all, and unrated tape dissipates heat better. Bathrooms, kitchens near a splash zone and any covered outdoor soffit need IP65 or above. Anything genuinely exposed to UAE weather — a pergola edge, a pool surround — needs IP67 as a minimum.
Size the driver with headroom and plan its access
Total the strip wattage per metre across the run, then specify a driver rated around 20-25% above it — a driver run permanently at its ceiling fails early in UAE ambient temperatures. Just as important, the driver must remain reachable after the ceiling closes: an inaccessible driver above sealed gypsum means cutting the ceiling open to replace it.

- What is the difference between LED strip and LED profile lighting?
- An LED strip is the bare flexible circuit board with visible emitters. An LED profile light is that same strip seated inside an aluminium channel with a frosted diffuser cover. The profile hides the individual dots, protects the tape and — critically in UAE conditions — acts as a heatsink, which meaningfully extends the strip's life.
- How long can one run of LED strip be?
- As a practical rule, around 5m on 24V and 2.5-3m on 12V before voltage drop dims the far end. Longer perimeters are not run end-to-end; they are split into segments injected with power at intervals from the driver, which keeps brightness and colour identical along the whole length.
- Which LED strip is best for a false ceiling cove?
- For a standard gypsum cove throwing light upward, 24V single-colour tape at 3000K with a matched dimmable driver covers the majority of UAE residential work. Choose tuneable white if the room needs to shift between warm evening and neutral daytime light, and RGBW rather than plain RGB if you want colour without losing a clean white channel.
- Can LED strip lighting be used outdoors in the UAE?
- Only with the right ingress rating and thermal allowance. IP65 suits covered soffits and shaded balconies; IP67 or higher is required anywhere exposed to direct weather or wash-down. Summer ambient temperatures also matter — strip specified for a European exterior will run hotter and age faster here, so an aluminium profile to sink the heat is strongly recommended.
