Wall Lights in the UAE

Wall lights do something ceiling lighting cannot: they put light at eye level. A room lit only from above has a bright floor and dark walls, which reads as low and slightly grim no matter how many lumens are in it. Light on the vertical surfaces is what makes a space feel tall, finished and comfortable.

Ziera supplies wall lighting for both sides of the envelope — interior sconces and up-down washers for corridors, stairs, majlis and bedheads, adjustable reading lights for hospitality and residential bedrooms, and IP-rated exterior wall fittings for facades, entrances and boundary walls. Interior and exterior families are available in matched finishes so a villa elevation and the hallway behind it can be specified as one coherent scheme.

What to get right

Set mounting height by function

General sconces sit around 1.6-1.8m from finished floor — above standing eye level so the source is not stared into. Bedside reading lights go lower, roughly 1.1-1.3m, so the beam lands on the page rather than the pillow. Stair and corridor markers sit lower still, at 300-400mm, lighting the floor plane only.

Check what an up-down light will show you

An up-down washer throws two hard triangles of light onto the wall behind it, which is a beautiful effect on smooth plaster or stone and a merciless one on a wall with patching, joints or uneven render. Confirm the substrate is genuinely flat before committing to grazing light across it.

Rate exterior wall lights for the facade they sit on

Entrance and facade fittings need IP65 as a minimum and a housing that will not corrode within reach of coastal air. Just as important is the staining risk: a cheaply plated fitting bleeds rust down render or stone, and that mark is far harder to remove than the fitting is to replace.

Put wall lights on their own dimmed circuit

The value of wall lighting is that it can carry a room on its own at night, at low level, with the downlights off entirely. That only works if it is separately switched and dimmed — grouped onto the main lighting circuit, it becomes decoration rather than a usable layer.

Questions

Wall Lights FAQs

How high should wall lights be mounted?
Around 1.6-1.8m from finished floor for general sconces, which keeps the source above standing eye level. Bedside reading lights sit lower at roughly 1.1-1.3m so the beam falls on the book, and stair or corridor markers go at 300-400mm to light the floor without glare.
What is an up-down wall light?
A fitting that emits from both top and bottom, throwing two triangles of light up and down the wall behind it. It is used to graze texture on stone, render or plaster and to add vertical light in corridors, stairwells and on facades where a ceiling fitting would be impractical.
Can wall lights be used outdoors in the UAE?
Yes, with exterior-rated fittings — IP65 or above, with a corrosion-resistant housing suited to coastal air. Ziera supplies matched interior and exterior wall families so a facade and the interior behind it share the same finish and colour temperature.
Do wall lights provide enough light on their own?
For circulation, stairs and evening ambience, usually yes — that is exactly what they are good at. For task areas such as kitchens, worktops and desks they are a supporting layer, not the primary source, and should be paired with downlights or task lighting.
