Cove Lighting: How to Get the Detail Right

Cove lighting either makes a ceiling float or shows every dot and shadow. The difference is about forty millimetres of gypsum detail, decided before the ceiling closes.

Cove lighting is the most-specified and least-detailed element in UAE interiors. Almost every villa and apartment fit-out includes it; a large proportion of them end up with a visible line of dots, a hard shadow where the light meets the ceiling, or a strip that is plainly visible from the sofa. None of those are product faults. They are detail faults, and every one of them is decided on the gypsum drawing before a single metre of tape is ordered.

What follows is the detail, the strip selection that follows from it, and the specific mistakes that produce each of the common failures.

The detail: four dimensions that decide everything

A cove is a ledge that hides a light source and throws light onto the ceiling. Its performance comes down to four measurements.

Choosing the strip

Once the detail is right, strip selection is straightforward and comes down to three decisions.

Voltage: 24V for anything long

Perimeter cove in a villa room is easily 15–20 metres of run. On 12V, voltage drop makes the far end visibly dimmer and slightly warmer than the near end within about three metres. 24V roughly doubles the usable run and is the sensible default for any cove. Longer perimeters are split into segments with power injected at intervals rather than run end-to-end.

Density: match it to how much the wall diffuses

A deep cove throwing light onto a ceiling gets its diffusion for free — the ceiling does the work, and standard-density tape is fine. A shallow cove, or one where the strip sits close to a visible edge, needs high-density or COB tape so the emitters blend before anything reflects them.

Colour temperature: 3000K, and consistently

3000K is the right answer for almost all residential cove in the UAE. It is warm enough to feel like evening light and neutral enough not to yellow white paint. 2700K can look sallow against the cool white paint common here; 4000K in a living room reads institutional. The far more important rule is consistency: mixing reels from different batches produces a visible colour step along the ceiling that nothing will fix afterwards.

Six cove details that work

1. Single perimeter cove

The default. A continuous cove around the room's perimeter, throwing light up. Makes the ceiling appear to float and raises the apparent height of the room. Works in almost any space and is the one to choose if you are choosing only one.

2. Double-level cove

Two stepped levels of gypsum, each with its own strip on its own circuit. The lower level lights the upper; the upper lights the ceiling. Gives genuine depth in large rooms and, because the two levels dim separately, two distinct moods from one detail. Needs 400mm of ceiling void, which rules it out in many apartments.

3. Wall-grazing cove

The cove faces down instead of up, grazing light down a feature wall. Beautiful on stone, ribbed timber or textured plaster — and merciless on anything flat and imperfect. Only specify this where the wall finish is genuinely good, because grazing light finds every joint and patch.

4. Floating ceiling raft

A suspended gypsum panel with cove lighting around all four edges, hung below the main slab. Defines a zone in an open-plan space — over a dining table or a seating group — without walls. The most effective way to give an open-plan UAE villa distinct rooms.

5. Shadow-gap perimeter

A narrow, deliberate gap between wall and ceiling with the strip hidden inside it. Reads as a fine line of light rather than a glow. Very contemporary, very unforgiving of construction tolerance — the gap must be perfectly consistent or the line varies in width visibly.

6. Cove plus curtain pelmet

Combining the cove with the curtain box, so the same detail conceals the track and lights the ceiling. Efficient in apartments where ceiling void is scarce, and it puts light where the fabric is, which flatters the window wall at night.

Tuneable and colour-changing cove

Two upgrades are worth the extra cost, and one usually is not.

  • Tuneable white (CCT) is worth it in living areas and bedrooms — the same cove runs at 4000K during the day and 2700K in the evening, which is the closest a fixed installation gets to daylight behaviour.
  • RGBW is worth it in majlis, media rooms and children's rooms. The dedicated white channel is essential: with plain RGB, your everyday white is mixed from three colours and always looks slightly off.
  • Plain RGB is rarely worth it in a primary living space. It gives you colour but no usable white, so the cove stops functioning as lighting on the 360 days a year nobody wants purple.

Before the ceiling closes

Cove lighting is the element where late decisions cost the most, because everything is buried. Confirm all of the following at first fix:

  1. The cove profile is drawn with real dimensions, not indicated as a generic detail on the ceiling plan.
  2. Driver locations are fixed, accessible after handover, and ventilated — not sealed above closed gypsum.
  3. The cove is on its own dimmed circuit, separate from downlights. This one decision creates most of the room's flexibility and costs nothing at first fix.
  4. Power injection points for runs over about 5m are drawn and wired.
  5. The strip is specified by reel and batch so the whole job comes from one production run.

How deep should a cove be for LED strip lighting?
Around 100–150mm from the strip to the face of the ceiling it lights, with a lip 50–80mm above the strip and an opening of 80–120mm. Shallower than that and the light hits the ceiling in a hard band before it has room to spread, which is the most common cove failure and is impossible to correct once the gypsum is closed.
What colour temperature is best for cove lighting in the UAE?
3000K for most residential spaces — warm enough to feel like evening light, neutral enough not to yellow white paint. Consider tuneable white in living rooms and bedrooms so the same cove can run cooler by day and warmer at night. Why can I see dots in my cove lighting?
Either the LED density is too low for how close the strip sits to what it lights, or the cove is too shallow so the emitters reach the ceiling before their beams overlap. Fix it with higher-density or COB tape, or with more cove depth. Adding brightness makes the dotting more obvious, not less.
Should cove lighting be on a separate switch?
Yes, and on its own dimmer. It is the single most valuable circuit decision in a room: it lets the cove carry the space alone at low level in the evening with the downlights off. Grouping cove and downlights on one circuit permanently removes that possibility, and it cannot be undone after first fix.
Can cove lighting replace downlights entirely?
For ambient light in the evening, often yes — a well-detailed cove will light a living room or bedroom comfortably on its own. It cannot do task lighting, so kitchens, worktops, desks and reading positions still need a directional layer. The best schemes use cove for ambience and a small number of downlights for the specific tasks.
